« Je me concentre sur la tranquillité de l’océan, du bord de mer et de son environnement, souvent perçus comme dynamiques, intenses et agités. Je recherche des moments où la lumière est tamisée, où les lignes et les formes sont nettes, les ombres sont douces et les reflets sont énigmatiques. Je souhaite capturer une version du « moment décisif » de Cartier-Bresson, mais dans la nature et sur le littoral. Cette puissance environnante peut être apaisée par l’absence de couleur. Attiré par le minimalisme, j’élimine tous les pixels superflus pour créer l’essence de l’image. » Mitchell Anolik
Le réchauffement climatique s’affirme de plus en plus dans la partie septentrionale de la Russie, au-dessus du cercle polaire. La sœur d’Uliana et ses cousins vont se rafraîchir dans un ruisseau près de la maison de campagne familiale à Lovozero. Avec +30°C en juin, c’est environ +15°C au-dessus de la moyenne qui est maintenue depuis plusieurs jours.
Faisant partie des derniers indigènes d’Europe, les Saamis de Russie ont perdu leur autonomie nomade avec la montée du pouvoir soviétique dans les années 1920. Ce peuple qui vivait principalement de l’élevage de rennes et de la pêche dans la toundra a dû vivre dans des immeubles d’habitation. Enfants de la nature, les Sâmes étaient déprimés à l’idée de perdre leurs rythmes ancestraux et d’être enfermés.
Rassemblés dans le principal village saami – Lovozero, considéré comme une réserve, d’autres villages ont également été construits sur les terres saami pour regrouper les éleveurs de rennes. Installés pour travailler dans des kolkhozes, ils n’ont plus le droit d’être sames : la pratique de la langue et le port du costume traditionnel sont interdits.
Aujourd’hui, quelque 1 500 personnes vivent sur la péninsule de Kola, mais seulement 200 parlent la langue et la plupart d’entre elles sont âgées. Fiers de leurs traditions immatérielles, ces habitants s’efforcent de préserver leurs pratiques ancestrales tout en s’adaptant à la modernité. À ces difficultés s’ajoute le réchauffement climatique persistant dans la région arctique avec des pics de température de 15°C au-dessus de la moyenne en été. Les conséquences de ce changement devront par ailleurs être surmontées par ce peuple de l’Extrême-Nord.
18 août 2020 : Une jeune fille devant son salon de thé, complètement détruit sur l’île de Namkhana. Après le passage du cyclone Aila en 2009, il est devenu évident que des événements cycloniques fréquents transformeront les habitants des Sundarbans en réfugiés climatiques.
Les Sundarbans est une région faite d’innombrables bras et canaux du delta du Gange qui, par le Hooghly et d’autres, descendent vers le golfe du Bengale. Il s’y trouve la plus grande forêt de mangrove du monde. La région, caractéristique du Bengale, se trouve à cheval entre l’Inde et le Bangladesh.
Entre le 5 mai 2019 et le 25 mai 2021, les Sundarbans ont été confrontés à des cyclones – Fani, Bulbul, Amphan et Yaas – tous suffisamment dévastateurs pour justifier la crainte d’un déplacement massif. Dans les Sundarbans indiens, 54 des 104 îles abritent une population humaine d’environ 4,5 millions de personnes.
La déforestation extensive et la submersion d’une grande partie des mangroves ont laissé peu d’arbres pour protéger le sol des marées hautes et des fortes pluies, ce qui a accru l’érosion du sol et réduit l’efficacité de la prévention du réchauffement climatique et du blocage des cyclones, d’où les destructions massives d’Aila, de Yaas et d’Amphaan. Le blocage du COVID-19 a laissé les habitants sans emploi et sans revenu. Avec le temps, les Sundarbans sont destinés à devenir le théâtre de la plus grande migration humaine de l’histoire.
« Photo prise en 2015 avec un Leica Q et un 1.7/28 mm au « Champ de Mars » près de la Tour Eiffel à Paris (France) où se joue régulièrement le spectacle de marionnettes « guignol ». Je me suis accroupi sous la scène dans l’obscurité pour capter toutes les expressions des enfants pendant le spectacle et j’ai été stupéfait de voir à quel point ils étaient attentifs et émus par ce qui se passait. En tant qu’acteur, ce fut une leçon pour moi, car j’ai cherché toutes les façons d’exprimer la surprise, les rires et la peur. » Guy Chapellier
Voici Charley. Il vit dans les collines sous l’Observatoire Griffith à Los Angeles. Ses compagnons de jeu sont un garçon de 5 ans et une fille de 10 ans. Pendant la Covid, la famille a eu la chance de déménager dans une nouvelle maison avec beaucoup d’espace à l’extérieur pour jouer. Le garçon aime se suspendre à une balançoire et Charley lui court après… il aimerait bien pouvoir lui aussi se suspendre à une balançoire !
« Alex and Zoe » est un projet en cours intitulé « Natural Tendencies », dans lequel j’étudie la relation complexe et symbiotique entre les êtres humains et le monde naturel. Je suis très consciente de la nature précaire de notre environnement changeant, de la fragilité de la vie et de l’éphémérité de l’enfance. Il s’agit d’une image de mon fils Alex, tenant notre canard domestique, Zoe. Pendant la période COVID, nos enfants ont passé beaucoup de temps avec les animaux de notre petite ferme, car ils ne pouvaient pas jouer avec d’autres enfants.
Dans la ville de Dhaka au Bangladesh, de nombreux sans-abris ont perdu leur domicile et leurs biens en raison des fréquentes inondations, de l’érosion des rivières et d’autres catastrophes naturelles. Contraints de migrer en ville pour tenter de reconstruire leur vie, ils se retrouvent sans aucun abri, vivant dans des bateaux et sur les routes sans but précis. Pour ces réfugiés sans identité clairement établie, le bateau est un lieu de refuge et de paix au milieu d’une existence instable. Ils survivent en travaillant comme vendeurs ambulants, bateliers, et en occupant d’autres petits emplois précaires.
« Nous nageons dans un océan de Prana, la force vitale. Nos vies humaines font partie de quelque chose de plus grand. Nous sommes des gouttes d’eau individuelles, mais nous appartenons à l’océan.
Dans l’océan de la vie. J’explore nos vies dans et autour de l’eau à un niveau plus spirituel. J’utilise une caméra sous-marine pour me rapprocher des sujets alors qu’ils se fondent dans l’océan. L’eau est la métaphore qui nous lie tous en tant qu’expression d’une conscience unique. » Gavin Libotte
« Lorsque je rencontre des personnes qui me touchent et m’inspirent d’une manière ou d’une autre, j’ai envie de montrer les choses qu’elles touchent en moi. Je deviens particulièrement enthousiaste lorsque je vois plusieurs couches de leur personnalité en même temps. J’ai trouvé très excitant d’essayer de capturer cela dans mes portraits.
Dans mes portraits, je recherche l’honnêteté et la vulnérabilité. Je crois que la vulnérabilité fait de nous des êtres humains plus sympathiques et qu’elle rend le monde un peu plus amical et plus compréhensif. Les personnes qui se montrent vulnérables donnent à l’autre la confiance qu’il peut lui-même être ce qu’il est.
Mes portraits se distinguent par le fait qu’ils ont, d’une part, le caractère stylisé d’un portrait de studio et, d’autre part, la rudesse et l’authenticité d’un portrait de documentaire social. »
Un homme porte un gros poisson sur sa tête depuis le vieux port jusqu’au marché aux poissons de Hamar Weyne, à Mogadiscio, en Somalie. Ce marché est le plus fréquenté de la ville en raison de sa proximité avec le port, où les pêcheurs apportent leurs prises quotidiennes pour les vendre. 27 novembre 2022.
La Somalie est un pays qui possède d’abondantes ressources naturelles, notamment son littoral continental de 3 330 kilomètres de long. Sa situation stratégique, avec un accès au golfe d’Aden et à l’océan Indien, en fait une destination populaire pour des millions de tonnes d’espèces de poissons migrateurs chaque année. Par conséquent, les eaux somaliennes comptent parmi les zones de pêche les plus riches d’Afrique, avec un large éventail d’espèces de poissons qui soutiennent à la fois les industries de la pêche artisanale et commerciale. Malgré ce potentiel, le secteur de la pêche en Somalie n’a pas atteint son plein potentiel en raison des conflits en cours et du manque d’investissement dans l’industrie. Néanmoins, les riches zones de pêche du pays restent une ressource importante pour sa population et une source potentielle de croissance économique.
« Une femme âgée se tient à côté d’une voiture avec sa fille et trois autres femmes qui se préparent pour le défilé de la foire aux chevaux de Ballinasloe. La foire aux chevaux de Ballinasloe est la plus ancienne foire annuelle aux chevaux d’Irlande. Les voyageurs s’y rendent pendant une semaine pour vendre et échanger leurs chevaux. La tradition veut que les femmes et les jeunes femmes se déguisent et défilent sur le champ de foire et dans la ville de Ballinasloe. »
Le 11 mars 2022, les proches du soldat ukrainien Taras Didukh, 25 ans, pleurent sa dépouille lors des funérailles organisées dans l’église des très saints apôtres Pierre et Paul de Lviv, en Ukraine, avant d’être enterrés au cimetière de Lychakiv.
Sur cette photo prise le 21 mars 2022, un homme à vélo marche sur les décombres du centre commercial Retroville, détruit par une attaque d’artillerie russe, le 20 mars 2022, au nord-ouest de Kiev, en Ukraine. L’attaque a fait au moins six morts.
Cette photo montre un petit gorille né en janvier 2022 dans le groupe de reproductions du zoo de Madrid, qui fait partie du programme européen pour les espèces menacées. Ces gorilles de l’ouest sont en danger critique d’extinction et chaque naissance est une lueur d’espoir pour la survie de l’espèce. Les programmes de conservation sont plus que jamais nécessaires. Il s’appelle Kibo, du nom du plus haut sommet du Kilimandjaro.
La pandémie de Covid-19 a entraîné un nombre important de décès et a provoqué une perte dramatique de vies humaines ainsi que la perte d’emplois pour des dizaines de millions de personnes. Les perturbations économiques et sociales qui en ont résulté ont été dévastatrices. Beaucoup ont eu l’impression que le monde s’effondrait sous leurs yeux. À ce jour, la pandémie continue de susciter une grande tristesse.
La tribu des Mundari est une communauté indigène du Sud-Soudan connue pour ses liens étroits avec le bétail. Les camps de bétail font partie intégrante de leur mode de vie, les jeunes hommes de la tribu s’occupant des troupeaux pendant de longues périodes, parfois jusqu’à six mois. Les camps sont généralement situés dans des zones reculées où le bétail peut librement paître, et les hommes vivent dans des abris de fortune faits d’herbe et de bâtons.
Durant leur séjour dans les camps de bétail, les jeunes hommes acquièrent des compétences essentielles telles que la garde de troupeaux, l’élevage et l’autosuffisance. Le bétail est très apprécié par les Mundari, et sa possession est une source de fierté et de statut social. Le bétail est utilisé pour le lait, la viande et comme monnaie d’échange pour les dots et autres transactions sociales. Le mode de vie des Mundari a été menacé ces dernières années par les conflits armés et les déplacements causés par l’instabilité politique au Sud-Soudan. Malgré ces défis, la tribu continue à maintenir son lien profond avec son bétail et à préserver ses traditions culturelles.
Le 24 septembre 2022, des étendages de tissus chatoyants brillent sous les reflets du soleil alors qu’ils sont suspendus pour sécher au-dessus d’un champ à Narayanganj, au Bangladesh. Les travailleurs suspendent les vêtements sur des cadres en bois, tandis que les teintures se fixent au soleil. Les vêtements seront ensuite utilisés pour la confection de t-shirts, de gilets, de pantalons, etc.
‘Stadtbaum » signifie arbre urbain. Il s’agit des arbres urbains et de leur résistance au niveau élevé d’urbanisation. On trouve des arbres partout dans la ville, mais ils reculent progressivement. De plus en plus, les villes deviennent un désert de béton.
Je voulais séparer les arbres et leur ériger un petit monument. J’utilise pour cette série un appareil photo 35 mm. Chaque image est une multiple exposition sur un seul négatif. Cette photo a été prise à Berlin en 2014.
Cette image a été prise lors d’une promenade dans les rues du quartier proche des pyramides de Gizeh, au Caire, en Égypte.
« Changer les mentalités : Dans un environnement islamique, il n’est pas courant qu’une enseignante emmène ses élèves au bord de la mer en guise de récréation et prenne des selfies avec eux, mais le temps change, tout comme le niveau d’acceptation des gens. Aujourd’hui, certaines femmes essaient de faire ce qu’elles sont censées faire et non ce qu’on leur dit de faire, en respectant toutes les exigences de l’islam. Les choses changent au fil du temps, de même que les processus de pensée des gens, ce qui a un impact positif direct sur la société. » Shahriar Farzana
Le marché aux poissons de Hamar Weyne à Mogadiscio est une plaque tournante de la vente et de la distribution de poissons dans la ville. Situé à quelques mètres du vieux port, le marché est une destination clé pour les acheteurs locaux et internationaux. Les pêcheurs et les porteurs apportent leurs prises quotidiennes au marché, où les commerçants et les acheteurs négocient les prix des différents types de poissons. Le marché est un lieu vivant et animé, avec un flux constant d’activité pour les pêcheurs et les commerçants, ce qui en fait une source vitale d’emploi et d’activité économique pour la ville.
Une grand-mère qui coud un tigre en tissu s’émerveille de sa petite-fille qui danse dans le comté de Licheng, province de Shanxi, Chine, le 7 novembre 2011.
« Depuis 13 ans, je me photographie en train de vivre avec une maladie chronique appelée syndrome de fatigue chronique ou encéphalomyélite myalgique (ME/CFS), pour laquelle il n’existe pas de traitement. Le projet suit la progression de ma maladie, depuis le moment où j’ai été confinée à la maison jusqu’à celui où j’ai dû quitter mon appartement et emménager chez mes parents pour recevoir de l’aide, puis où mon état a continué à s’aggraver jusqu’à ce que je sois complètement clouée au lit, incapable de parler ou de bouger, et qu’il faille installer une sonde d’alimentation et un cathéter PICC. » Whitney Dafoe
Elles l’ont fait volontairement et avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme, les participantes à une « Women’s mud run » à Duisburg (Allemagne) en 2019.
« Un après-midi, au début de la quarantaine, j’ai entendu mon fils demander à son père s’il pouvait prendre un bain, ce à quoi son père a répondu par l’affirmative. Un peu plus tard, je suis allée dans la salle de bains avec mon appareil photo pour immortaliser mon fils et son chien Marius dans la baignoire. »
« La Sardaigne est une région où les opportunités sont rares et où les gens doivent inventer un métier pour vivre. Cristina et Tosino sont devenus éleveurs de rois cavaliers et de caniches. Ils ont 54 chiens et vivent avec eux dans la maison de campagne près de Sassari. »
« La photo illustre la situation dans un bar de la mer Baltique polonaise. Elle fait partie d’une série intitulée « Relations ». L’existence de personnes équivaut à l’existence de relations. Une relation amoureuse, une relation platonique, une relation haineuse, une relation avec l’espace, une relation avec la solitude, le silence, la lumière et l’obscurité et la relation la plus importante de notre vie – la relation avec nous-mêmes. Nous créons des relations partout et toujours. »
« Depuis 2020, des militants écologistes occupent les arbres, les champs et les maisons de Lützerath, un hameau de l’ouest de l’Allemagne. Ils s’opposent à l’expulsion du village et à l’entreprise énergétique RWE, qui souhaite extraire les millions de tonnes de lignite qui se trouvent sous le village. La résistance de ce petit village est devenue un symbole dans la lutte contre la crise climatique. »
« Rocky, membre de la communauté des gens du voyage irlandais, est assis sur un canapé recouvert de plastique lors de sa première communion. Les meubles recouverts de plastique sont très courants dans la communauté en raison de la présence de nombreux enfants dans les foyers. »
Aliyana Stokes, âgée de 10 ans, et son frère Bryson Stokes, âgé de 5 ans, assistent à un cours sur la sécurité des armes à feu pour enfants, avec des répliques d’armes à feu, alors que les gens se rassemblent au champ de tir de la communauté Choppa, le dimanche 10 juillet 2022 à Welcome, dans le Maryland.
Ce champ de tir est devenu un lieu de rencontre pour les propriétaires d’armes à feu afro-américains qui souhaitent apprendre la sécurité des armes à feu, l’autodéfense et disposer d’un endroit pour s’entraîner sur des cibles. De nombreux participants viennent des environs de Washington, DC et Baltimore, MD, et ont été touchés par la violence armée croissante dans les grandes métropoles des États-Unis, ce qui a conduit beaucoup de habitants à se procurer des armes à feu comme moyen de protection personnelle.
« Je m’appelle Wen Hua Chen, mais tout le monde m’appelle Zola Chen. Je suis particulièrement fascinée par les baleines, ce qui m’a amenée à me rendre dans divers endroits, tels que Tonga, le Sri Lanka, la Nouvelle-Zélande, l’Afrique du Sud et le Japon, pour capturer des images étonnantes de ces magnifiques créatures.
Les baleines à bosse doivent leur nom à leur longue nageoire pectorale et peuvent atteindre 11 à 16 mètres de long, les nouveau-nés mesurant 3 à 6 mètres. Elles se reproduisent et mettent bas dans les régions tropicales, migrant de l’Antarctique lointain vers les eaux chaudes de juillet à octobre pour élever leurs petits avant de retourner en Antarctique pour se nourrir. »
« La routine quotidienne de ma mère consiste à enrouler des bigoudis dans ses cheveux, puis à les recouvrir d’un foulard pendant que les boucles se fixent. Lorsqu’elle dort la nuit, ses cheveux se lissent et le lendemain matin, elle répète la même opération. Malgré sa démence, elle se souvient de faire cela tous les jours. Ses cheveux et l’image qu’elle donne d’elle-même sont très importants pour elle. Cette image fait partie d’un projet profondément personnel et émotionnel qui se penche sur les luttes quotidiennes auxquelles ma mère est confrontée à mesure qu’elle vieillit et lutte contre les effets de la démence et le déclin de ses capacités physiques. Ce projet est une réflexion sur le lien qui m’unit à ma mère, à la fois dans le moment présent et dans la perspective de son passé. Il capture les défis auxquels elle est confrontée, mais célèbre également la résilience, la force et la grâce dont elle fait preuve face à l’adversité. »
« Les Nenets sont un peuple autochtone de Sibérie dont l’économie traditionnelle est depuis longtemps ancrée dans l’élevage nomade de rennes, la pêche et la chasse.
Ils vivent dans des chums : de petites huttes faites de peaux de rennes, afin d’assurer un minimum d’isolation thermique, en particulier pendant l’hiver. Sur cette photo, Roman regarde à l’extérieur du chum, avec ses joues rouges usées par le froid, -50°C. » Tommaso Vecchi
« Après un trek épuisant et interminable pour atteindre Phuktal, l’un des temples les plus anciens de tout le Tibet indien, et après avoir écouté les prières matinales des moines bouddhistes, j’étais sur le chemin du retour lorsque j’ai rencontré un groupe d’enfants moines. Ils aiment passer leur temps libre à jouer au football. Lorsque le ballon tombe de la falaise, il est étonnant de voir à quelle vitesse ils sont capables de le récupérer. Celui qui laisse tomber le ballon doit le récupérer pendant que les autres le regardent. À ce moment-là, j’ai eu l’impression que le temps s’était arrêté. » Tommaso Vecchi
Un homme, debout avec sa hyène, se prépare avant le spectacle, dans l’un des petits villages du nord-est désertique du Nigeria. Ce sont les mystérieux hommes hyènes du Nigeria.
Principalement composés de Haoussas (l’un des plus grands groupes ethniques d’Afrique de l’Ouest), ils viennent des zones rurales du Nord et se déplacent de ville en ville.
Ils ne passent jamais plus de deux jours au même endroit et arrivent enveloppés de serpents, de singes dressés et de hyènes enchaînées. Ce sont des conteurs traditionnels et ils présentent un cirque de rue avec de la magie noire (appelée « juju ») pour le public qui croit que ces animaux ont des pouvoirs magiques.
On dit qu’ils utilisent la magie ancienne pour acquérir des super-pouvoirs et ne faire qu’un avec les animaux. Le spectacle de ces conteurs traditionnels est grandiose, accompagné de feux et de sons de tambours, et tous les spectateurs y participent.
À la fin du spectacle, de nombreuses personnes achètent des amulettes ou des potions magiques. Il y a ceux qui veulent régler des dettes de jeu, ceux qui veulent un bébé et ceux qui veulent faire venir la pluie pour la récolte.
